Little Boy Blue Rhyme | Poem Song

Little Boy Blue Rhyme

The rhyme we are going to introduce here is Little Boy Blue. This was first printed in Tommy Thumb’s Little Song Book in 1744. The poem was found to be much older than the year it was printed. One of its versions is presented in King Lear by Shakespeare.

Nursery rhymes help the growing-up kids to correlate their actions with what they speak. They enjoy the rhythmical tones and try to imitate what they see, or hear.

Scientifically, rhymes route the child’s mind towards the real thinkers. They listen, pronounce, see and act like what is being watched. Rhymes give a shape to their developing states of mind.

It is argued that the main character in the rhyme is referred to as Cardinal Wolsey. He was the son of the Ipswich butcher. The boy acts as Hayward who is assumed to be a guardian of all the animals in the land. He slept all over the grass and is intended to be awakened by the animals.

Little Boy Blue Rhyme Poem Song proposes the features that allow a child to think about what a Hayward is supposed to be in the field and how they work while being the caretakers.

Let us further explore the lyrics of the rhyme: Little Boy Blue

Little Boy Blue Song Lyrics

(Modern Version)

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn,
The sheep’s in the meadow, the cow’s in the corn.
Where is that boy who looks after the sheep?
He’s under a haystack, fast asleep.
Will you wake him? Oh no, not I,
For if I do, he’ll surely cry.

A version from Shakespeare’s King Lear

Sleepest or wakest thou, jolly shepheard?
Thy sheepe be in the corne;
And for one blast of thy minikin mouth
Thy sheepe shall take no harme.
