Green Grow the Rushes Lyrics | Song for Kids

Green Grow the Rushes

Green Grow the Rushes, O is a song that is often admired by educators or is seen for teaching purposes. The lines of the verse are repeated till you reach number twelve. The song is also known by the names- The Teaching SongThe Dilly Song, or The Carol of the Twelve Numbers.

It is a kind of antiphon (communication or communicative) poem. After singing some words it is answered in the form of a chorus. For example, the verse starts with one and is then repeated till twelve including all the numbers (1 – 12) in the last verse.

Also, the song for kids was referred by the musicologists, and is believed that the song was sung at the start of the 12th century. The rhyme is often connected with biblical or astronomical connections.

The lyrics of the song are in such a manner that there exists a different meaning in every line of the song from the point of astronomy.

The origin of Green Grow the Rushes lyrics

The lyrics of the song are a mixture of astronomy, Christian catechesis (engaged in religious education), and pagan cosmology.

Earlier, people adopted writing as their primary source of earning a livelihood. Even today it is accepted by many people. So, from that point of view, it was assumed that the song was sung by English Children in the first half of the 19th century, as the exact origin is still unknown. And it was stated that the song was well-admired by the people of the West of England.

Some of its versions are sung by the children on the occasion of Christmas carol.

Since the poem is seen as a purpose for teaching the kids, there are other versions including the same pattern but with different words. Like one of Sharp’s version follows as:

“Come and I will sing to you.

What will you sing to me?

I will sing you one-e-ry.

What is your one-er-y?

One is One…”

Green Grow the Rushes Melody Lyrics

I’ll sing you one, O
Green grow the rushes, O
What is your one, O?

One is one and all alone
And evermore shall be so.

I’ll sing you two, O
Green grow the rushes, O
What are your two, O?
Two, two, lily-white boys,
Clothed all in green, O

One is one and all alone
And evermore shall be so.

I’ll sing you three, O
Green grow the rushes, O
What are your three, O?
Three, three, the rivals,
Two, two, lily-white boys,
Clothed all in green, O

One is one and all alone
And evermore shall be so.

I’ll sing you four, O
Green grow the rushes, O
What are your four, O?
Four for the Gospel makers,
Three, three, the rivals,
Two, two, lily-white boys,
Clothed all in green, O

One is one and all alone
And evermore shall be so.

I’ll sing you five, O
Green grow the rushes, O
What are your five, O?
Five for the symbols at your door,
Four for the Gospel makers,
Three, three, the rivals,
Two, two, lily-white boys,
Clothed all in green, O

One is one and all alone
And evermore shall be so.

Aiken Drum Lyrics
